Germany proposes to accept stateless persons into the army

Members of the Bundestag have proposed that people without German citizenship be accepted into the army in order to prevent shortages in military units. The Rheinische Post newspaper reported.

“We must think more European when looking for young people ready to serve in the Bundeswehr”, – the edition quotes the words of the chairman of the Committee on Defence in the Bundestag Marie-Agnes Strack-Zimmermann.

The idea was supported by MPs from the ruling Free Democratic Party and the opposition Christian Democratic Union. They noted that service in the Bundeswehr should provide an opportunity to obtain German citizenship in a simplified procedure. However, supporters of the initiative noted that now there is no consensus on the procedure for obtaining it.
