In the world of automotive journalism and entertainment, few names are as well-known as James May. Born on January 16, 1963 in Bristol, England, May has carved out a niche as a prominent broadcaster, journalist and car enthusiast. His unique combination of detailed technical knowledge, a penchant for unusual aspects of automotive engineering, and a dry sense of humor earned him the affection of millions around the world.
Early life
James Daniel May, often affectionately known as “Captain Slow” because of his cautious driving style on “Top Gear”, showed an early interest in cars and mechanics. He was educated at Caerleon Endowed Primary School in Newport before attending Rotherham College of Arts and Technology. His first foray into work was not with cars or television, but with a job in a hospital as a registrar. He also taught music at an elementary school for a while. However, his passion for writing and cars soon steered him down a different path – automotive journalism.
The beginning of his career in journalism
May’s serious journalism career began when he worked for Engineer and Autocar magazines in the 1980s. His writing was characterized by his detailed approach and his ability to make complex topics interesting and accessible. It was here that he honed his style, which later became his calling card in television.
