Since the rulers of Westeros have been male since ancient times, the high lords believe that Viserys’ firstborn son should be the next king. Rhaenyra, however, has a different opinion on the matter
After Viserys’ death, a civil war level conflict erupts on the continent, later to be known as the Dance of the Dragons or the Dance of the Dragons. News of her father’s death catches Rhaenyra Targaryen in the castle on Dragonstone and she self-proclaims herself queen. The supporters of Alysenta and Viserys’ son, Aegon, also make their opinions known. Both the deceased king’s daughter and his widow initially try to avoid bloodshed in memory of their former friendship. Meanwhile, two opposing sides are already forming on the continent: Princess Rhaenyra is supported by the Black Party, Prince Aegon by the Green Party. The first season is mainly devoted to the preparation for the confrontation, but the second season, as the showrunners stated, will concentrate on the war itself.

Even at the production stage, “House of the Dragon” began to be compared with the prequel “Lord of the Rings” – the series “Rings of Power” – However, almost immediately after its release, it became clear that “House of the Dragon” will be much more successful. The first episode on HBO and HBO Max for 24 hours watched 9.9 million people, and by the fifth episode the average number of viewers per episode reached 29 million. The final episode was watched by 19 million people at the same time – such a number on HBO has not been since the end of “Game of Thrones”.
